Arrival in Tonga!

We finally arrived. My biggest thought when we were approaching the island was "Wow, it's a lot flatter than I imagined." Although we were jet lagged, we had a whole schedule when we arrived. We were greeted at the airport by current volunteers and PC staff, bearing what I would describe as similar to a Hawaiian Lei (called a kahoa here) and transported to the hostel/guest house where we will spend one night before joining our Tongan host family. The full schedule was probably good as it did not give us any time to think about how scary all of this is.

We had our first kava circle (kava is a drink made from the powder of a crushed root - it looks and tastes like dirty dish water, but leaves your mouth slightly numb). Afterwards, we enjoyed a BBQ at the PC office with the current volunteers - ironically, I already have a connection with one of them ... she knows someone who goes to the same church as Julie and had already heard that I was coming. She graduated from USC and seems like a really cool girl.

Leaving on a Jet Plane

After a day and a half of orientation, apparently we were ready for Tonga and we headed to LAX for our flight to New Zealand and then flight on to Tonga ... the surreal feeling of "am I really doing this?" has yet to end. I hoofed it down to In-N-Out at lunch for my last animal style cheeseburger today. Yum ... it was SO good! I have realized that I am finally in the company of "my kind of people" for the first time in my life - at least in a group setting. I can't believe it's taken me this long to find them. I have identified one other Christian in the group so far. He seems like a really cool guy and I am thankful to have a fellow believer nearby.

Saying Goodbye to Family

My Mom, Dad and Mark saw me off at the airport in San Luis this morning. It was really hard to say goodbye. My Dad was so great ... reminding me that they would be coming to visit me and how excited he was for me. I was surprised the Mark had gotten himself out of bed to join us as it was an early flight. All of these goodbyes are so hard. Bonnie picked me up at LAX to hang out for a little while one last time with her and the boys, then she dropped me off at the Sheraton where my next adventure was to begin. Peace Corps orientation.

Saying Goodbye to Montrose ...

I didn't take too many pictures, but I had to take a few photos of my now empty apartment. I loved this place so much. I think that I lived here the longest I have ever lived somewhere (except for my parents house, of course!). I will miss the hideous peach with mauve trim exterior combo and the awesome carpet going up the stairs. :) I will miss my home very much.

Guatemala & Belize

Julie & I had a GREAT time in Guatemala together - it was so much fun to see where she had lived for 3 years of her life and get a small glimpse into her life there. I traveled on to Tikal National Park and then Belize on my own while she headed back to the States for work. I loved exploring these places, but traveling on your own is certainly not as much fun as with your best friend!

Here are a few photos from the streets of Antigua:

Tikal!

Tikal (pronounced tee-call) is one of the coolest places I have ever been ... ranking right up there with Peru's Machu Picchu.

This is a map of all the ruins that make up Tikal ... very extensive. I am always in complete awe of things built SO long ago and yet are so much more impressive than anything we build today!

Archeologists have only been able to partially uncover the ruins here due to environmental concerns ... while it is sort of sad not to be able to see it how it would have looked originally, it makes your mouth drop right open when you round a corner in the jungle to see an enormous temple looming ahead of you.

The temples reach above the jungle canopy, making the climb up them, well worth it for the incredible views!

After a fun, but exerting day of climbing the temples and pyramids (and sweating more than I knew I was able to), I was very happy to spend the evening at this beautiful hotel in the town of Flores, Guatemala. These red tuk-tuk's were ALL over the city! They are so cute!

Belize ...

These are my first views of the Carribbean ocean from the terrace at my hotel. And of course, my first fruity, umbrella drink :)

After a day of beach relaxing, snorkeling (including swimming with some nurse sharks & sting rays), I joined a trip to explore some of the ruins of Belize.

The day started with a boat ride...

I fell in love with the beautiful lily pads.

After the boat ride, was a bus ride in this, then another short boat ride...

The ruins were incredible!!!
